Denture Questions, Answered for Kingston Patients

Clear, honest answers to the questions Kingston patients ask most — about complete and partial dentures, cost and CDCP coverage, loose or broken dentures, daily care and what to expect at a consultation.

What does a denturist do, and do I need a referral to see one?

A denturist is a regulated oral health professional in Ontario who specializes in the design, fabrication, fitting and maintenance of removable dentures. Denturists work directly with patients, so you can book a complimentary consultation at Nova without a referral. When your treatment also involves a dentist or oral surgeon — for example extractions or implant placement — we coordinate that care with you.

How much do dentures cost in Kingston?

Fees depend on your individual needs, the type of denture, the materials and design selected, and any confirmed insurance or CDCP coverage. We review the estimate and your expected portion with you before treatment begins, so there are no surprises. The most accurate way to find out is a complimentary consultation, where we can assess your situation and explain your options.

Does the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) cover dentures?

The CDCP helps cover some costs for eligible members, but it does not automatically make all treatment free. Some services require preauthorization or have frequency limits, and co-payments may apply. Our CDCP page explains how coverage works and links to the official government information.

What is the difference between complete and partial dentures?

Complete dentures replace a full arch of missing teeth (upper, lower, or both) and rest on the gums. Partial dentures replace one or several missing teeth while working alongside the healthy natural teeth you still have, using clasps or attachments to stay in place. The right choice depends on how many teeth are missing and the condition of your remaining teeth.

Will my new dentures look natural?

Yes. Tooth shape, size and shade are selected with you to suit your face and preferences, not a generic set of teeth. Where the treatment allows, a try-in appointment lets you preview the appearance and bite before the denture is finished, so there are no surprises.

How long does it take to get used to new dentures?

Most people adapt over days to weeks. Reading aloud, starting with softer foods and wearing the denture as advised all help. Follow-up adjustments during this period are a normal, expected part of treatment — not an extra. Lower dentures tend to take a little more practice than upper ones.

My denture has become loose. What can be done?

Gums and bone change shape over time, so looseness is common. A reline refits the inside of your existing denture to your current tissues, and same-day relines are available in suitable cases. If the teeth or bite are worn, a new denture may serve you better — we give you an honest recommendation.

Can a broken denture be repaired?

In many cases, yes — and same-day repair is available in suitable cases. Please do not use household glue: it is not safe in the mouth and often makes a professional repair harder. Bring all the pieces and call ahead so we can plan.

How should I clean and store my dentures?

Clean them daily with a soft brush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner, rinse after meals, and store them in water or denture solution when not worn. Avoid hot water and abrasive pastes, which can warp or scratch the denture. Our denture care guide covers daily routines, what to avoid and when to call the clinic.

How often should I have my dentures checked?

An annual checkup is worthwhile even if your denture feels fine. Fit and tissue changes happen gradually, and patients often adapt without noticing. A yearly visit lets us catch small issues early, recommend a reline or adjustment if needed, and review the health of your oral tissues.
